Apprenticeships and Advanced Apprenticeships are aimed at young people aged 16-24, and involve working and training with an employer, and studying for other qualifications with a learning provider.
They last for between one and five years, depending on the type of Apprenticeship and the type of employment.

They lead to National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs), Key Skills qualifications and, in most cases, a technical certificate.

Entry to Employment

Entry to Employment, or e2e as it's also known, was launched nationally in August 2003. e2e is designed for young people who have potential, but are not yet ready or able to enter into an Apprenticeship.

Young Apprenticeships

Young Apprenticeships for 14-16 year olds became available from September 2004 for those at the beginning of Academic Year 10. The first year will be a pilot programme for about 1,000 students in total.

It will be a high quality route at Key Stage 4 for well-motivated pupils who'll start on their career with an employer and learning provider by spending up to two days a week in the workplace. Employers will come from engineering, automotive industries, business administration, logistics, and the arts and creative industries.

Adult Apprenticeships

The Learning and Skills Council (LSC) is currently developing arrangements for those over 25. Apprenticeships for adults will include all the elements of an Apprenticeship including Key Skills.

Trials will be held in the following industry sectors:
• Engineering
• Construction (Construction Skills)
• Health
